Microsoft Azure Services Platform

Just posting this so I can remember to check out the link later http://www.microsoft.com/azure/default.mspx

Looks cool, heaps of hype & ney sayers as there is with everything new, going to be interesting to see how this changes development.

Cloud within a cloud

While playing with all this cloud stuff (i.e. a services that provides you with something but you don’t know/care about the back end) I re-discovered Zoho

More interestingly I found ZoHo’s Business services, I have been a zoho user for ages, even a few of my ORM comparisons use some zoho services but now taking a closer look a year or so later there is heaps on offer.

ZoHo’s Business services has a dynamic “apps” section where you can “add” anything (uses a iframe) so you can comine many sites, services & data into a comprehensive, workable “web application”.

They have mostly a 1 for 1 with the google services (including email & custom domains), I like ZoHo’s “desktop” interface better as a functional application than google’s services. On the other hand I like google sites better.

ZoHo does a “wiki” but I’m not sure how functional it would be as a all in one solution for those looking for that sort of thing (as I am).

Going to investigate what the limits are with the zoho wiki & compare it to googles sites. For now it looks like I may end up with 2 domains & services (google & zoho) and use ZoHo’s Business services to put it all into 1 usable interface.

Is that Fog I see

I was getting right into all this cloud stuff & came accross the conclusion “while it may be free, easy to use, etc. You do sacrifice some customization & are at the whim of the service provider”.

There are things I want to do that just aren’t possible (yet) with Google sites & Google Apps, so if you are considering moving to Google sites/apps do your homework first (I tend to dive right in).

This is not a downer on ther service, its a great service & I will probably move towards it & understand its still in its early days.

Getting Cloudy

Things are starting to get cloudy & I am out to take full advantage of it.

Setting up your own site on Google pages (or moving entire site to google servcies), how easy is it?
(10 mins later)
Ok, so far I have managed to easily setup a new blog a site using Google Pages that is planned to be used for the future Meikle Programming page.
I have run into an issue with Google Pages, I want to point a “Blog” link on my nav bar to this new blog but currently it only allows existing google pages to be linked, Hmm may have to do more investigation.
Also what about custom stuf such as a company Knoldge base etc, perhaps a free host would be more suitable but all the ones I have seen don’t offer email hosting.
Going off to investigage what else is possible…
Current Plan/Thought: Use as much of the free google serices as possible (perhaps using a paid domain name etc) & what ever else is NOT possible to do using a “Free” web hosting account for 3rd pary apps (such as a KB or support center etc..) & use the google pages site to stitch it all togther.

After Thought, Hmm how to move all my existing blog posts to the new blogspot one???
Update: went away from Blogger.com & stuck with wordpress (they rock!), just exported blog from old site & imported into new wordpress accout, all done in a few minutes.
Regrets: not may, if any. Site themes, I really liked my old theme but it wasn’t on the list of available themes but i guess thats acceptable for a free managed blog. Thanks WordPress!

More cool free things to check out from VS Gallery

Ok, kept browsing & found lots more cool things to check out (most free)…

Class Builder Wizard

Class Builder Wizard is a Microsoft Visual Studio wizard that generates data object classes and a full data layer implementation for database objects (MS SQL Server and others). It can also be used to quickly create custom classes (not necessarily based on a database object) by defining the structure of the class “manually.”

TTxGen

TTxGen is a generic single file generator based on the text templating engine.

Persistor.NET

Persistor.NET®  is a library that provides transparent persistence for pure object-oriented development.

It is made for Software Developers who want to see persistence as a component, embedded in their applications – invisible to the end user.
