Everyone has their own oppinion of what anti-virus to use & guess what, so do I.
Key things to look for in a good anti-virus system.
- ease of use : This also means that it should be transparent to every day use. (viruses scare most un-informed users so the software shouldn’t)
- actially works (hard to rate but investigate them first, read reviews etc)
- frequent updates (the more updates the less likely you are to be caught out)
- price: some charge the earth others seem really cheap, compare a few products before buying (even if you are looking at free versions as you may decied to upgrade later).
- Quit bugging me, some software bug you about everything. “Do you wish to delte this virus”, Hmmm, let me think!. Thankfully all virus software has (or should have) a setting/preference for this.
Personally I use & highly recomend Nod32 (from eset.com) & since the day I started using it I have never looked back & sometimes forget that I have it, its just there & working.
AVG : Most people know or have heard of AVG, I myself am not a fan but I know heaps who are. For a free anti-virus product I say thanks to grinsoft for making it possible. If you are looking at the paid version please check out Nod32 or Avast first, both have a 30/60 day free trial.
Avast : This is my favorite Free (for personal use) anti-virus software out of all that I have tried. The pro version is a yearly subscription service.
Norton : again most people have heard of norton (mostly because its forced on you by sales people & pre-installed when you buy a new HP or Compact PC). From my experience with this I personnaly dont like it but we all have our preferences, I know those that swear by this.
Nod32 : The best I know!, Its a paid yearly subscription & very resonably priced.
Windows Live OneCare : DONT GO THERE!!! Slows down PC’s & is a big resource hog.
I have instlalled this on a few clients pc’s (at their request) & have had nothing but problems. Apart from the 3-5hrs to get it actually working on 1 pc it constantly bugs the uers & since they dont know anything about PC’s they call me about it. They did purchase the first release (which was a beta) so hopefully windows will make it better in the future. This is only my personal experience with this & one client (3 pc’s).
Well, thats my spat on anti-virus stuff, I Hope some one found it helpful.
